We’ve enjoyed an incredibly mild winter all across Ontario and as a result there is very little ice on the big lakes. Depending on how our Spring weather unfolds in Muskoka, we could get the Port Sandfield Market open for 2016 by April 28th.

Thankfully July, August and September enjoyed warmer and sunnier weather than we’ve had for some time and we all had a memorable summer. Fall is here and after Thanksgiving it’s time to start preparing for winter.

Summer has arrived in Muskoka, bypassing Spring altogether. Silver Stream Farms market is open again for the 2015 season. Early warm weather has accelerated the growing season and we have the fresh Ontario asparagus in our produce room now. Rhubarb is ready and it won’t be long before Ontario strawberries are being picked.

The summer that never was is over and Fall wasted no time in arriving in full force. We have been harvesting our giant pumpkins since the first week of September for the market in Port Sandfield and bringing up the best of Ontario’ Fall fruits and vegetables. The leaf colours here in Muskoka are spectacular and a weekend at the cottage is a must this time of year.

After a late winter and short spring, Ontario field-grown fruits and vegetables are beginning to reach the local markets. Asparagus leads the charge every summer and this year the quality and taste has been exceptional. There is still time to enjoy but the season always ends too soon.
Fresh Ontario strawberries are in our Port Sandfield Market now! Warm weather has made the berries extra sweet.

The ice finally came off Lakes Joseph and Rosseau on April 30. Spring so far has been cold and wet with very few sunny days. Our Port Sandfield Market will officially be open Friday May 2nd for the 2014 season. We’re looking forward to seeing all our regulars again.

Winter came early this year and has settled into a good old fashioned Muskoka winter with lots and lots of snow and some very cold nights and days. Snow loads have been huge throughout the region and most property owners know by now that their roofs and porches need shoveling. Lake-effect streamers have hit some areas like Bracebridge and Gravenhurst much harder than others.

This time of year provides the widest variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables available in Ontario. Sweet corn is at it’s very sweetest, local apples are coming to market, raspberries and strawberries are still coming from ever-bearing fields and the watermelons are dripping in flavour. Niagara peaches are exceptional and Fall squashes are rolling in.
